Death of Oswald Hewer Jamison Aged 17 – “Son of a Groom”

In my last post I finally got round to writing about the place and circumstances of my great uncle Oswald’s birth– in this post I’m recording his sad demise at the young age of just seventeen. Oswald was born in 1895 in Cumbria to my great-grandmother Annie Hewer; at some point she moved to Northern Ireland and married my great-grandfather William McDowell Jamison (I have … Continue reading Death of Oswald Hewer Jamison Aged 17 – “Son of a Groom”

Oswald Hewer Jamison – Born in Cumbria 1895

This post is long overdue; several years ago I received confirmation that my great uncle Oswald Hewer Jamison was born in northern England, but I somehow forgot to post an update on here. The question of Oswald’s place of birth was first posed  ten years ago by Nevin of the North Antrim Local Interest List  blog. Nevin had located an Oswald Hewer in an 1895 registry … Continue reading Oswald Hewer Jamison – Born in Cumbria 1895

Updates to The Family Tree – William and Betty Jamison Descendants and the Cousins Family

My second cousin Shirlene (I think that’s right – our paternal grandfathers were brothers?) has been good enough to fill in some gaps and correct some names and dates on our shared family tree. I’m always really grateful when people take time out to get in touch and help build our tree – without your kind input, it would be little more than a family … Continue reading Updates to The Family Tree – William and Betty Jamison Descendants and the Cousins Family

Annie Hewer, A Lead Miner’s Daughter

Following up an earlier clue from the 1901/1911 census records that my great-grandmother Annie Jamison nee Hewer was born in England, together with information provided by Nevin at NALIL that Annie’s son Oswald Hewer Jamison was born in Cumbria I was able to locate a birth certificate for Annie from 1874 from the General Register’s office online. Annie would thus have been 21 when her son … Continue reading Annie Hewer, A Lead Miner’s Daughter

Updating the Family Tree – William McDowell Jamison’s Parents, Date & Place of Birth

Fantastic source of North Antrim genealogy info and all-round great guy Nevin Taggart from the North Antrim Local Interest blog contacted me in July (I know, I’ve got a backlog of blog posts to thrash out!) with some exciting news for this site; he had located a baptism record for my paternal great-grandfather William McDowell Jamison. Up to this point, William was as far back … Continue reading Updating the Family Tree – William McDowell Jamison’s Parents, Date & Place of Birth

Updating the Family Tree – Farewell, Aunt Phyllis

It’s always hard to write these sad updates; they diminish, not add to our family story, but they are an unavoidable element of any family history. It’s with great sadness that I pass on news of the loss of my Aunt Phyllis nee Jamison, earlier in the year in March, aged 83. (edit – corrected from 84) Phyllis passed away in Belfast, and is survived … Continue reading Updating the Family Tree – Farewell, Aunt Phyllis

Updates to the Family Tree

Thanks to my second cousin David (I figured out our degree of cousin-ness here on Ancestry.com’s blog ) I’ve updated the family tree with regards to his parents’ names and key dates, and I’m hoping to get some more information on the descendants of William Jamison soon. On my grandfather’s side, I’ve updated some details for my cousins Richard and David, sons of my aunt … Continue reading Updates to the Family Tree

Shore Road Belfast – 1966 Video

In my last post I shared some pictures of the Jamison garage and houses at 265-269 Shore Road, Belfast, that stood until their demolition in the 1980s; on the site now stands a printing shop. The pictures were screen grabs from a  video of Belfast in 1966, which Jimmy, a member of the Belfast forum, has posted on Youtube: Of particular interest to me and my … Continue reading Shore Road Belfast – 1966 Video

Jamison Garage on Shore Road Belfast- Updated Picture(s)

I talked about the most recent picture I had of the family garage on the Shore Road, Belfast in a previous post ; the picture from the 1950’s was sourced from the Belfast Forum, an invaluable source of history, pictures and local knowledge for all things Belfast; there’s a particularly great (and very long!) thread about Belfast’s Shore Road: you need to create an account to … Continue reading Jamison Garage on Shore Road Belfast- Updated Picture(s)
